A Grand Country Garden in Cobham
In the pretty, picturesque town of Cobham, Surrey, where large estates and meticulously designed gardens have been the norm for many years, Infinite Landscaping & Groundworks recently transformed a huge garden into a magnificent and functional space that exudes traditional elegance — but with a modern touch of comfort.
The Concept: Marrying Tradition with Modern Design
Our client wanted to revamp their garden while preserving the time-honoured look and traditional charm that defines their estate.
Cedar Nursery originally designed the garden and came up with a layout that embodied the client’s vision, but as the project progressed we were trusted with more and more creative freedom by the client.
This resulted in an end product that stayed true to the original design, but increased the overall functionality and aesthetic of the garden.
Bringing the Design to Life
We started our work by carrying out some intricate site preparation — removal of the old pond to accommodate the new, larger water feature envisioned by Cedar Nursery. This water feature, measuring 15 metres by 7 metres, required precise excavation to a depth of 1.2 metres. This groundwork was essential for establishing a solid foundation to support the pond’s structure, whilst ensuring the preservation of mature trees and other key elements of the existing garden too.
With the excavation complete, we were able to start building the framing for the pond. This involved creating reinforced walls to provide a good foundation for the pond liner. Bottom drains were installed, which would be essential for cleaning the pond and turning over the water, as well as a filter bog — a natural water filtration system to further boost the ecological balance of the pond. From there, the pond liner was carefully laid into the structure, ensuring that any wrinkles in the liner were smoothed out, and fully fitted in such a way that there would be no leaks.
A focal point of the pond that we introduced was the composite decking jetty, positioned at one end of the water. The jetty stretched over the pond and provided a vantage point towards the beautifully constructed folly. Designed as a tranquil seating area, the spot was created to feel serene, with views over the water and in full view of the folly.
We completed the pond area by bordering it with limestone paving, creating a ring walk that surrounded the pond. This pathway not only provided easy access to the pond, but also went a long way towards improving the overall aesthetic value of the garden too, bringing the other features together in a combined and balanced space.
Making the Garden More Functional
With the project underway, Infinite Landscaping Ltd had the opportunity to further develop and enhance Cedar Nursery’s first design. Significant additional work was in the area around the outdoor kitchen, which was originally planned to be attractive and functional. Having been given complete artistic freedom to extend the concept, we added an Argentinian grill alongside the existing gas BBQ (all pictured), with all the modern conveniences that would be expected in a well-equipped outdoor kitchen. To ensure a cohesive aesthetic, we used similar reclaimed materials in the construction of the outdoor kitchen as were used for the folly, unifying the garden’s overall design.
It was an obvious feature, the composite decking jetty, but it added so much to the garden, providing an area where you could truly sit back and relax, without looking at all out of place alongside the rest of the garden. The Satisfying End Result
One year down the line, this short video shows how the work at the Cobham property turned out!
